The New California Beach, Coast and Ocean

The California is the iconic camper van. After building more than 280,000 units of this bestseller, Volkswagen is now presenting a brand-new generation: the new California. It is based on the long version of the ultra-modern Multivan. Volkswagen has redesigned every aspect of the camper van, making it more spacious, smarter, more advanced, more versatile and more sustainable. And yet it still follows the example of its iconic predecessors, continuing one of the automotive industry’s great success stories.

Volkswagen has of course retained the most important California details, such as the lifting roof and an interior that has been thought out down to the smallest detail. And of course, the new California can also be transformed from the ideal VW van for everyday use to a camper van for ultimate travel pleasure in an instant. The latter has now become even more tangible thanks to the latest drive, driver assistance and infotainment systems and a new camper van architecture.

For the first time, all California versions are equipped with two sliding doors as standard, which offers even more versatile usage options. Another first in the new California is a plug-in hybrid powertrain with four-wheel drive. This means that the camper can temporarily function as an electric vehicle and at the same time count on a long driving range thanks to the combustion engine.

California Beach

The California Beach has the same interior concept as the Multivan: the backrests of the separate rear seats can be folded forwards and not backwards, as is usual in a VW van. However, from the California Beach Tour onwards, the backrests of the outer seats can also be folded all the way back, so that a flat bed surface can be created above them. The comfortable folding mattress is simply placed on the folded down seats and a rear support in the Beach Tour and Beach Camper.

The darkening system in all models from the Beach Tour onwards has also been upgraded: Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has developed removable California storage bags for the rear side windows, which are simply hung on the top of the windows and cover the entire window surface. A flap with a zip then opens up storage compartments for clothing and all kinds of utensils. Practical roller blinds are integrated into the window frames of the sliding doors and tailgate. Opaque sun blinds are again used for the front side windows, which are attached to the door frame with magnets.

California Coast & Ocean

The kitchenette in the California Coast and California Ocean is extremely versatile. In the Coast, the kitchen is finished in the two decorative trims Platinum Sandwick (light upper section) and Raven Brushed (dark lower section). In contrast to the Coast, the upper section in the Ocean is finished in the light decorative trim Frizo Sandwick. With their iconic design and the proven lightweight aluminium material, the cabinets are similar to those of the predecessor, but offer an even more practical layout.

Viewed through the tailgate opening, there is again a cabinet with storage compartments on the left-hand side, which also houses the fuses for the living area. However, this cabinet is no longer used to remove the gas bottle, because it is now much easier to reach via a door in the loading area. That is why the filler opening for the drinking water tank is now located under the cabinet, for extra safety. The connection for the outdoor shower is integrated right next to it. The Coast and Ocean also follow the ingenious functionality concept of their predecessor in terms of kitchen architecture. Nevertheless, everything is new and even more perfectly thought out. On the left, instead of a deep wardrobe, there is now a cupboard with a sliding door, which offers space for kitchen utensils, for example. To the right of this begins the worktop, which covers the stove and sink. Below that is another cupboard with storage space.

The refrigerator that opened upwards in the previous model has now been replaced by a much more practical pull-out model in the style of the Grand California. Since the kitchenette no longer extends to the driver’s seat, additional space has now been created there. This can be used, for example, for the variable folding outdoor table, which can not only be locked outwards as a practical shelf on the kitchenette, but also inwards as a small dining table or as an extension of the kitchen worktop towards the driver’s seat.
